Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic has been given a four-match European ban for his red card against Basel at Anfield in the Champions League in December.

The 20-year-old midfielder will miss both legs of the Europa League last-32 tie against Besiktas.

He received one more than the usual three-match ban after being sent off for Benfica against Juventus in last season’s Europa League semi-final.

Markovic responded to the ban on twitter with the short message: “4?”

His dismissal against Basel in a

1-1 draw

was criticised by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers as the Serbian appeared to accidently flick his hand into the face of defender Behrang Safari.

Liverpool opted not to appeal and as well as missing both legs against Beskitas, the first of which is at Anfield on Thursday, he will miss both games in the next round if the Reds progress.
