Man City beat West Brom in Zabaleta's last Etihad game

Kevin de Bruyne

Manchester City have all but guaranteed Champions League football for next season after they comfortably beat West Brom at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side are third on 75 points with one game remaining and have a three-point and five-goal cushion over fifth-placed Arsenal.

As long as City avoid a heavy defeat at Watford on Sunday, then they will finish in the Premier League’s top four.

They boosted their goal difference against a West Brom side who had goalkeeper Ben Foster to thank for keeping the score respectable.

Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring with an easy tap-in from Kevin de Bruyne’s pass after 27 minutes.

Less than two minutes later, the Brazilian turned provider as he poked the ball back for De Bruyne, who sent a sublime curling effort past Foster from about 20 yards.

Yaya Toure added a third 10 minutes into the second half, exchanging passes with Sergio Aguero to slot past Foster, before Hal Robson-Kanu pulled one back for the visitors three minutes from time.

Pablo Zabaleta received a huge reception as he came on as a second-half substitute for his last home game as he prepares to leave City after nine years, and the Argentina international was later handed the captain’s armband when skipper Vincent Kompany was substituted.

More to follow.
