Reading are set to name ex-Manchester United and Netherlands defender Jaap Stam as their new manager.

The 43-year-old will succeed Brian McDermott at the Championship club after his second spell in charge of the Royals lasted just six months.

Ajax’s assistant coach last season had been favourite to succeed McDermott.

Stam, part of United’s 1998-99 treble-winning side during his three years at Old Trafford, is set to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.

He will become the club’s first non-British manager when he takes charge of a Reading side who finished 17th in the Championship last season.
